I just recently entered the Create a superhero character for the Stan Lee Foundation. Below you will find my submission and I would really appreiciate any support given as I know this comp works via support for the artist. Its one of those comps that could really be that chance that I need to be a serious comic book/character artist and a dream come true for me as for many on this site. I also encourage anyone to join in the fun as its really for anyone.

Slate - Character Description

'SLATE' real name, Robert Mantle (A.K.A Robbie) now aged 17 has the power to control earths elements including Rock, Crystals and Steel. After being born with a rare deficiency leaving him little chance to survive, he was saved by a treatment of synthetic DNA containing Alien properties. He is able to create himself an exo-skeleton of armour which he also may use smaller fragments as projectiles. He is also able to use the armour on his feet for flight.

It all begins with Roberts Father, Captain David Mantle (callsign 'SLATE'), the US Armies top test pilot working with their top secret Aviation facility based in Area 51. He would come across the secrets behind alien technology harvested from several crash sites of Extraterrisrial space craft used in the defence forces jet fighters. Materials recovered from ships would also be meshed with current flight suits which granted greater focus and reflexes for pilots.

The biggest discovery would be hearing of the properties of Alien DNA found in crash victims which allowed human test subjects a stronger immune system and greater control of their brain capabilities demonstrating telekinesis. Although full grown male test subjects had never survived longer than a few days after the DNA's properties became overwhelming for the body.

The birth of his first child (Robbie) would arrive as bittersweet news when hearing his newborn was born with a rare deficiency hindering his growth and immune systems and allowing little chance of survival. In desperation Captain Mantle steals a test sample of the alien DNA tested on human subjects, treating his son with a small dose hoping for a miracle. It would arrive and his child would grow to be healthy though the Captain would become a fugitive from the government regarding the theft, going into hiding to protect his family.

Robbie would grow to appear normal as his mothers little miracle though strange occurances seemed to follow him as he developed in his­ early teen years. Cracks and broken objects would seem to find him and he was blamed as a clumsy teen. Though a week into high school he would find himself the target of schoolyard bullying which would escalate to a large brawl in the classroom being held down on the floor awaiting a terrible blow. A large explosion was heard as Robert felt his fear take control. Once opening his eyes he realised the ground around him and the bullies had fallin through pulling half the classroom into the floor below. Robbie would walk away with little damage though a few others students had been hurt. He felt himself connected to the explosion though could not explain why as the guilt lingered. The incident caused a stir in the town and alerted his father who finally returned to check on his son.

After the initial shock of his fathers return Captain Mantle would explain the past including what had occured at Robbie's birth. In doing so he would also pass on a package which would contain his fathers flight suit. The visit was short lived though as the Mantle's had been under surveilance all these years since the Captains dissapearance. Captain David Mantle would be captured and taken away infront of him leaving Robbie without a father again, and more questions about his world than he had ever thought possible.

He ­would return home with his fathers gift, though take little notice of it til trying the suit for halloween. Doning his fathers suit he realised the connection he had with the partially alien garment and the control it would allow him over certa­in materials. He would slowly develop his skills in secret before doning his father's callsign SLATE. Though still a boy, with little strength and mortal as any other human he will use his new found talents and powers in persuing his fathers capters while protecting his family, friends, city and oneday his planet.
